My Kanchanaburi Travel Guide
Kanchanaburi is two hours west of Bangkok, and it’s where the Thailand-Burma railway (the “Death Railway”) was built by Allied POWs and Asian labourers during WWII. The famous bridge over the River Kwai is still there, the museum is one of the better-curated WWII museums anywhere, and the surrounding hill country includes Erawan Falls – a seven-tiered turquoise waterfall that’s one of the prettier swimming holes in Thailand.
I’ve done Kanchanaburi twice as an overnight from Bangkok. It’s a genuinely interesting trip and the two-day version – history on day one, falls on day two – is much more rewarding than the rushed day-trip alternative.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kanchanaburi worth a trip?
Yes. WWII history (the Death Railway and the bridges), Erawan Falls (one of Thailand's prettiest waterfalls), and a quiet small-town scene on the river. Better as a two-night stay than a day trip.
How do I get to Kanchanaburi?
Train from Bangkok (3-4 hours, slow but scenic, follows the original Death Railway route). Van or private car (about 2 hours). Most people go by van or private transfer.
How long should I stay?
Two nights minimum. One night doesn't give you enough time for both the bridge/museum and Erawan Falls.
