A view across Thailand's southern coast at sunset

Every destination on the site, grouped by region. Some are full guides; others are starter pages that I’ll expand as I revisit and write up new stays. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, email me and I’ll point you to whichever guide on the site is closest.

  • Koh Lipe – far south, near Malaysia. The clearest water in Thailand.

The South – Gulf Coast

  • Koh Tao – Thailand’s diving headquarters.

If you only have time to read one planning guide on the site, read Where to Stay in Thailand. It pairs each region with the trip types it actually suits, and it links into the relevant city guides from there.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a first-time Thailand visitor start?

Bangkok plus one beach. Three nights in Bangkok, four in Phuket or Koh Samui. Read the Where to Stay in Thailand guide for the full breakdown.

Which destinations are off the beaten path?

Khon Kaen, Sukhothai, Mae Hong Son, Koh Yao Noi, and the Trang islands all see a small fraction of the visitors that Bangkok or Phuket do. If you've been to Thailand before and want quieter, those are where I'd point you.

Which islands are good for diving?

Koh Tao is Thailand's diving headquarters. Similan Islands (day trips from Phuket or Khao Lak) for liveaboards. Koh Lipe and Koh Phi Phi are also strong for snorkeling and casual dives.
