My Koh Lanta Travel Guide

Koh Lanta beach at sunset

Koh Lanta is the long, thin Andaman island about 90 minutes south of Krabi airport. It’s quieter than Phuket, less dramatic than Krabi, and much less day-tripped than Phi Phi. The west coast has a series of progressively quieter beaches as you head south (Klong Dao, Long Beach, Klong Khong, Klong Nin, Kantiang Bay), each with its own pace. Kantiang Bay at the south end is the lowest-key luxury stretch.

We did a slow Lanta week with the family during low season once and it remains one of our better Thailand beach trips. The price-to-quality math in May-September is hard to beat anywhere in the country.

Koh Lanta Travel Planning

Frequently asked questions

Koh Lanta vs Koh Phi Phi?

Lanta if you want long quiet beaches and to settle in for a week. Phi Phi for the dramatic karst scenery and a short stay. They're very different islands; Lanta is the slow one.

How do I get to Koh Lanta?

Fly to Krabi airport, then minibus and car-ferry (90 minutes total) to Lanta. From November the new bridge from Lanta Noi makes it a quick drive instead of two ferries. From Phuket, ferry direct in dry season.

How long should I stay?

Five to seven nights. Lanta is a do-nothing island; it rewards slow days.
