My Khon Kaen Travel Guide

A lakeside view in Khon Kaen at sunset

Khon Kaen is the closest thing Isan (Thailand’s northeast region) has to a regional capital, and the easiest entry point if you want to see the part of Thailand that the standard tourist circuit misses. It’s a university town, lakeside, with the cleanest air in the country in dry season and a food scene that rewards travelers willing to leave the tourist menu behind.

I’ve spent only a handful of days in Khon Kaen across multiple trips, but it’s one of those places I keep meaning to do properly. Real som tam, real laap, real grilled chicken, all at half the Bangkok price. If you’ve been to Thailand a few times and want something different, this is the direction.

Khon Kaen Travel Planning

Frequently asked questions

Why would I visit Khon Kaen?

For a Thailand trip that doesn't look like everyone else's. Khon Kaen is the heart of Isan (the northeast), the most culturally distinct part of Thailand. Real local food, regional dialect, almost no Western tourists. Great as a side trip if you've already done the standard route once.

How do I get to Khon Kaen?

Direct flights from Bangkok (BKK and DMK both run them, about 70 minutes). Overnight train from Bangkok if you want the scenic option. Driving is doable but it's a 6 to 7 hour haul.

How long should I stay?

Two to three nights as a side trip from Bangkok or as part of a longer Isan loop. Long enough to do the lake, eat several Isan meals, and visit a temple or two.

Bangkok John

Bangkok John was started in 2020 when I posted my first hotel review. The site now publishes regularly updated guides to Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Krabi, Hua Hin, and all of Thailand.

I'm a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member and an Emirates Skywards Gold member, so I lean toward Marriott properties when the choice is close. I pay for my own rooms.
