My Sukhothai Travel Guide

A Buddha statue at Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai Historical Park, at sunrise

Sukhothai was the first Thai capital, founded in 1238 and at its peak under King Ramkhamhaeng in the late 1200s. The historical park – about 12 km outside the modern town of New Sukhothai – is a UNESCO World Heritage site with around 200 ruined temples, monasteries, and stupas spread across a flat, green plain that’s made for bicycling. It gets a fraction of Ayutthaya’s visitors and the result is one of the most atmospheric ruin experiences in Southeast Asia.

We’ve made Sukhothai twice and both times the trip was anchored by sunrise visits to Wat Mahathat – the empty Buddha figure at the central temple is one of the most photogenic single sculptures in Thailand.

Sukhothai Travel Planning

Frequently asked questions

Ayutthaya or Sukhothai?

Ayutthaya for a quick Bangkok day trip. Sukhothai if you have more time and want fewer crowds. The Sukhothai Historical Park is the best preserved of the early-Thai-capital ruins, and it gets a fraction of the visitors.

How do I get to Sukhothai?

Fly Bangkok to Sukhothai (Bangkok Airways runs the only route, about 80 minutes). Driving is 6 to 7 hours and not worth it unless you're road-tripping the central north. Train + bus combo exists but eats a full day.

How long should I stay?

Two nights. Long enough for sunrise and sunset visits to the historical park and a bicycle day around the old city.
