My Pai Travel Guide

A misty Pai valley at sunrise

Pai is a small mountain valley town about four hours north of Chiang Mai on a notoriously winding road. The town is half hippie holdover from the early backpacker scene, half quiet Thai farming community, and the result is the easiest place in Thailand to do absolutely nothing. Cafes that exist for the cafe, hot springs in the surrounding hills, waterfalls on most outskirt drives, a night market with proper street food.

We’ve done Pai twice with the family. The drive is the price of admission. Once you’re there, the days are slow and the nights are cold (in cool season) and you walk away wishing you’d booked one more night.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pai worth the drive?

Yes if you have at least three nights to spend there. The drive is real – four hours on a winding mountain road, with 762 curves on the Wikipedia counter. People get carsick. But the valley itself rewards the trip, especially in cool season.

How do I get to Pai?

Minivan from Chiang Mai (cheap, 4 hours, motion sickness real). Private car (more comfortable, same time). Small plane from Chiang Mai (12 minutes, dramatic, occasionally cancelled for weather). I do the private car each time.

When should I go?

November to February is the cool season and the best time. Pai gets genuinely cold at night – pack a fleece. March and April have the smoke problem. May to October is rainy but the valley is at its lush, green best.
