Dok Kaew Gardens is the independent-living alternative to Vivobene Village on the same Mae Rim corridor. Where Vivobene’s resident base skews older and the campus mixes independent and assisted care, Dok Kaew is more squarely focused on the active 60s-and-70s independent retiree.
The location is Mae Rim, north of Chiang Mai, in the same general area as Vivobene and Care Resort. The Mae Rim corridor has become the de facto retirement village zone for northern Thailand – decent road access, quieter rural setting, walkable to a few cafes and shops, and 30 to 40 minutes from central Chiang Mai.
What it actually is
A dedicated independent-living community with assisted-living available as care needs grow. Residents have apartments with their own kitchens, the option of communal dining, scheduled social programmes (yoga, walking groups, day trips), and on-call medical staff.
The shape differs from Vivobene in two ways:
- Resident demographic skews younger (60s and active 70s rather than 70s and 80s).
- Care infrastructure is lighter – this isn’t where you’d go if you need significant daily assistance. Once care needs progress, residents typically move to Care Resort or one of the higher-care options.
Who it’s a good fit for
- Active retirees in their 60s and 70s who want a structured community without the older demographic feel of Vivobene.
- Couples who are still healthy and want the optionality of campus living for the longer term.
- Retirees who specifically want Mae Rim’s quieter rural setting over the busier Hang Dong or city-edge options.
Not a good fit if you need meaningful daily care today – Care Resort or Cheewasuk would be the right starting point.
